Emil Ruusuvuori reflects on tough Bastad opener

Rising Finnish star Emil Ruusuvuori recovered from a set down to beat home hope Mikael Ymer in Bastad. Ruusuvuori, seeded at No. 8, handed a 1-6 6-4 6-3 loss to wildcard Ymer in his Bastad opener. Ruusuvuori made a bad start to the match but he bounced back in sets two and three to avoid an early exit.

“It was a very difficult start for me. I was very slow getting into the conditions, and it was much slower than I thought,” Ruusuvuori said. “But slowly I got into it, and I just started playing smarter. Point by point, I felt like I was a little bit better.

It was a tough fight in the end, and this time it came home so it was a good match in the end”.

Ruusuvuori claimed a comeback win

Ymer made an outstanding start to the match, having won the opening five games of the match.

Ruusuvuori saved a set point in the sixth game to get on the baord and to reduce the deficit to 5-1 but Ymer served out for the set in the following game. After easily winning the first set, Ymer had a great chance to start the second set with a break but Ruusuvuori saved three break points in the opening game of the set.

After saving three break points in the opening game of the second set, Ruusuvuori broke Ymer for the first time in the match. Ruusuvuori also had a break point in the fourth game but Ymer saved to win the game and reduce the deficit to 3-1.

Ruusuvuori saved a break point in the fifth game but couldn't do the same two games later as Ymer broke back in the seventh game. However, Ruusuvuori kept his focus as he broke Ymer in the 10th game to win the second set and force a decider.

The two players were all tied at three games apiece in the third set before Ruusuvuori won three games in a row to complete a comeback win. In the Bastad round-of-16, Ruusuvuori will play Slovak Norbert Gombos. On Tuesday, Gombos recovered from a set down to beat Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas.
