The top four seeds began their campaign at the Guadalajara Open on Tuesday and all but one of them made their way into the third round. Ons Jabeur and Maria Sakkari, who are bracketing the draw at the top and in the end didn’t face any problems in winning their opening-round encounters.
Third seed Caroline Garcia had a bit of bother but prevailed nonetheless. However, fourth seed Madison Keys crashed out in the last match of the day. The seventh-ranked Jabeur routed Alycia Parks 6-2, 6-2 well before an hour had passed on the clock.
The Tunisian finished the match with just an ace and a double fault to her name. The American, however, had six aces and seven double faults that let her down in the end. The higher-ranked player won 83% of her first-serve points and 44% of her second-serve points.
She also won 69% points on return on Parks’ second serve while the latter won 53% of her first-serve points. Meanwhile, the second-seeded Sakkari completed a 6-2, 6-4 win over Australian Storm Hunter. Sakkari needed 20 more minutes than Jabeur for her efforts.
The Greek played 34 first-serve points of which she dropped merely nine. Of the 24 points she played on her second serve, she won 13. Sakkari also won 16 of 24 points played on return on Hunter’s second serve. The 2022 finalist in Mexico converted four of five break points on her opponent’s serve while saving two of three break points she faced.
Guadalajara Open: Emma Navarro picks up form from San Diego
Camila Giorgi will be Sakkari’s next opponent. The Italian dispatched Cristina Bucsa 6-1, 6-2 in their second-round match in an hour and nine minutes. Frenchwoman Garcia posted a mammoth comeback win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich in their second-round match, winning 4-6, 7-6(5), 6-4.
In the 12th game of the second set, Sasnovich served for the match and even had a handful of match points but Garcia staved them off before setting forth on the path of victory. Emma Navarro, who reached the San Diego Open semi-final last week, continued with her merry momentum as she took out fellow American Keys in their second-round derby.
Navarro needed an hour and 23 minutes to post a 6-2, 7-6(5) win. Keys had 11 more winners than Navarro’s 10 but the 20 additional unforced errors she hit to her opponent’s 19 cost her the match. Lastly, 10th seed Victoria Azarenka also won her second-round match at the Guadalajara Open on Tuesday.
The two-time former Australian Open winner needed two hours and nine minutes to beat Dayana Yastremska, 6-4, 7-6(5). This was the 34-year-old’s 190th win at a WTA 1000 event. In fact, she’s the first player to get to this number in the tournament category, in the 14 years since it was started.
