Caroline Garcia had given false hope to the media and fans with the sparkling performance she showed against Naomi Osaka, in the first round of the Australian Open 2024. But the 30-year-old Frenchwoman's adventure in Melbourne ended early in the 2nd round. Garcia did not repeat the good things seen against the returning Japanese, being badly defeated in straight sets by Magdalena Frech.

4-6 6-7 was the final result, in a match in which in both sets the French tennis player managed to get the break first, only to suffer a comeback from the Polish player. Two important misses that cost Garcia dearly, as she is unable to continue the crushing victory in the first round against Osaka and is forced to say goodbye to her Australian dreams.

At the press conference, the French tennis player, number 16 of the seeding, said she was very disappointed and frustrated by the defeat she suffered, but she also explained that she had suffered from some physical problems that limited her during the match. The 30-year-old Frenchwoman in fact revealed that she had breathing difficulties during the match against Frech.

Caroline Garcia: "how do I find a solution on my serve if I can't breathe?

"It's true that the breaks in tennis are quite short, but when you play this sport you know what you're up against. My dream of winning a Grand Slam is still there. It's tough physically and mentally, there's an opponent of in front of you and you have to find solutions. And during the match, sometimes I couldn't even breathe: how do I find a solution on my serve if I can't breathe? It's the simplest thing in the world," said Caroline.

The current number 19 in the ranking then expressed her disappointment at having lost to a lower-ranked tennis player.

"It's only the second round of the Australian Open, but I was playing against a lower-ranked girl. Why am I in this state? I really don't know. I've been like this for a while and I can't get over it. In fact, it gnaws at me. Sometimes I wonder why I do it, but every day I tell myself that I will keep trying. Maybe eventually I will learn the lesson of my sporting career and move on to something else," she explained.
